After the holiday season is over you can use the tree for mulch, firewood, or if necessary, have your community pick up the tree and recycle it properly. Rather than just getting rid of the tree, how about composting it? Instead of wasting the tree in a landfill you can compost the tree and get additional value out of it. You can use the compost to add nutrients to your lawn, vegetable, or flower garden.
After the season is over, remove your ornaments and decorations. You can either compost the tree in your own compost pit or have it done for you. Your community or garbage collector will provide information about composting your tree, usually for a fee. Most garbage haulers offer tree pickup one ot three weeks after the holiday season. The garbage haulers take the Christmas Trees to compost sites instead of to the landfill. If you are a Dakota County resident, it is illegal to put any tree or yard waste into the trash. Besides having your garbage hauler remove your tree, possibly for a fee, you can also drop off your tree at an area compost site. The compost site locations in Dakota County are:
